Katherine Carbone Verotsky: Died from Sepsis Aged 42
Katherine Carbone Verotsky, from Portland Oregon, died in December of 2018. She was so beautiful but never seemed to realize it. Instead, she always focused all her attention on the people she met.
Katherine was a loving mother of two and in good health at the age of 42 when she developed mild “flu-like” symptoms. On the third day, her breathing became labored and her husband took her to their local ER. She was immediately transferred to a larger facility although the doctors thought she might not survive the move from one hospital to the other. Kate fought hard for 48 hours in the ICU, but ultimately we made the difficult decision to remove her from life support. She died on December 26, 2018. Her children were only 12 and 9 at the time of her death.
We aren’t sure of the exact cause of her infection; the infection was so far advanced by the time she arrived at the hospital the doctors could only speculate that it was “brought on by possible pneumonia”.
Since her death, I have worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the dangers of sepsis. I hope that Kate’s story can help prevent other families from experiencing the tragedy of losing a loved one to sepsis.
